10 WAYS TO REDUCE YOUR WASTE THIS VALENTINES DAY
Written by Katie Conklin
Happy Valentines Day!!
This year has been my most eco-concious valentines Day yet, so I wanted to share my tips and ideas with you :)
The problem with Valentines Day is that most of what we think of this day or bright red boxes of flavourless chocolate, unthoughtful glittered cards and plastic wrapped roses. These tacky gifts aren't even thoughtful, and it's not the point of Valentines Day! I still think flowers and chocolate and cards are wonderful, but let's give these gifts with more purpose and less plastic!
1. PRINTABLE KIDS VALENTINES CARD
This idea won't be for everyone, but if you DO have kids, you'll eventually have to buy a box of valentines for her/him to hand out to their friends. Well, I'm here to tell you, you don't HAVE to buy that box of valentinues, saving money AND packaging!
There are lots of fun printable ideas, all you need is access to a printer.
My favourite printables I've come accross so far are from Simple Made Pretty, such as these Trolls themed ones!
2. HEART SHAPED HOMEMADE PANCAKES
This couldn't be a more cute or fun breakfast idea for Vday. Find your favourite pancake recipe (we are BIG fans of blueberry pancakes in this out) and do your best to pour the batter into heart shapes onto the pan. You COULD do the cookie cutter method if you really want to strive for perfection :P
3. LOCALLY BOUGHT FLOWERS, SANS PLASTIC
Flowers, roses, bouquets... such a classic Valentines Gift! The problem is, they usually come wrapped up in several layers of plastic. This year, avoid getting your flowers from the super market and visit an actual speciality flower shop. Not only will you be supporting local, but you can easily request no plastic, and either ask for brown paper or string instead.
4. WEAR PINK OR RED YOU ALREADY OWN
An easy way to embrace Valentines is wear red or pink - from your undies to your sweater! We all own SOMETHING in these colours... so bring em' out for the occasion!
5. WINE OR WEED EVENING WALK
DATE IDEA ALERT: You can watch a movie or TV show any night - but how often can you set aside time to go for a nighttime walk under the moon and starts? Even better, pair it with wine or weed! Laugh, get deep, reminise, plan your life and and just talk!
6. HOMEMADE VALENTINE CARD FOR YOUR PARTNER
My favourite way to give a card to my Hubby is by printing a funny pun and writing a tiny note on the back side! It's so easy and he always get's a kick out of it.
7. LIGHT SOY CANDLES FOR AMBIANCE
It's just a mood.
8. HOMEMADE HEART SHAPED CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES
I did this this year, and it was actually so cute and easy! Just make chocoalte chip cookies in a size that will allow you to use a heart-shaped cookie cutter. Once your cookies are out of the oven, while they are still warm, just put the cookie cutter over top and clear away the thin layer of edges! Voila, heart-shaped cookies :)
9. BULK CHOCOLATE OR CANDY
Like I side up top, you can't really have a Valentines Day if there isn't chocolate involved! If you don't have time to bake heart shaped cookies, simply head to your favourite bulk shop and stock up on all the chocolates! Chocolate covered almonds, chocolate covered peanuts - whatever you want! Have the chocolate in bowls around your house, or add them to a jar and give them as a gift.
10. COCONUT OIL FOR SEXY TIMES
I can't talk up coconot oil enough, it's my favourite for so many reasons. One of them being, as lube (unless you are using condoms, then please omit coconut oil). It's safe, smells great and can usually be bought bulk or in a glass jar. Can't reccomend it enough.
Hope this was helpful!!
