Sustainable interior design is so important right now, more than ever. To have products that are sustainably sourced, have less off-gassing and are made locally can have a huge impact on your health and the environment. Ginny, from Virginia Ann Interiors, joined us on our podcast to discuss this very topic. She has provided us with her TOP 7 sustainable furniture companies. Check them out below!

1. Facebook Marketplace

We LOVE Facebook Marketplace, even more than Kijiji. There is less anonymity, and you usually have a mutural friend, which is a bit safer. People in your community are selling A TON of awesome pieces, so definitly check it out. It's always better for the envirnment to buy secondhand versus new!

2. Instagram vintage and antique sellers

If you don't have time to go to anitque stores or yard sales in peson and sift through the good and let's face, a lot of the bad, we highly reccomend following instagram accounts that do that work for you! Plus, buying vintage means less off-gassing and chemicals, given they were produced prior to mass production and harsh toxins. We love the intsagram account: Hint of Vintage!

3. Etsy

Etsy is an AWESOME place to find handmade, unqiue pieces by small businsses or indivudals. You can find awesome pieces from hand painted throw pillows to woven blankets. Be careful, it's ADDICTIVE!

4. Brentwood furniture

Brentwood Classics has been designing and manufacturing made-to-order sofas for Canadians for over 40 years and they actually care about the environment! All of their products are made of foam that is CertiPUR-US® certified. It is made without ozone depleters, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals. It is made without any harmful flame retardant chemicals and so much more! If you are looking for a beauitful sofa, perfect for you in everyway, give these people a call!

5. Crate and Barrel Canada

Crate and Barrell Canada has high-quality, on-trend furniture, home decor, cookware, dinnerware and more. Their website says this about their environmental initivitas: "While our collection has featured renewable woods and sustainable materials for a number of years, we are continuing to explore and introduce important initiatives that will help make our homes more thoughtful environments."

6. West Elm Canada

West Elm Canada is a unique modern furniture & home decor store, with online and brick and morter store options. We love West Elm for a ton of reasons. Mostly, you are able to sort through their products by "organic", "sustainbly sourced", "fair trade certified", "handcrafted" and "greenguard gold certified", making the process to find sustainable products for your home super easy. Not only that, 90% of their products are designed in-house AND In 2014 West Elm became the first US home retailer to carry Fair Trade products. This is clearly an amazing company!

7. Any local woodworker

Another great option for sustainable furniture is checking out any local woodworker in your area! You can easily find them online, or even at your local farm market. If you are in Halifax, we reccomened Lakecity woodworkers!
